Empowering Voters in 2023: Civic Information’s Impactful Partnerships, Data Offerings, and Future Expansion Plans

2023 was an exciting year for the Civic Information team as we advanced on our mission to connect Americans with accurate and trustworthy information about what’s on their ballot and who represents them in office.

First and foremost, we’re thrilled to have continued our impactful partnerships with Google, Vote.org, ActiVote, and WeVote. Together, our partnerships resulted in connecting over 110,000 folks with ballot data and representative data this year. This includes:

  • Nearly 35,000 voters accessed our ballot and representative data through the ActiVote app, which had an immediate impact of a nearly 20% increase in voter turnout in primary, local, and special elections this year.
  • Over 77,000 voters accessed our ballot data through Vote.org’s ballot lookup tool, with 60% of users being under the age of 35.
  • Vote.org’s ballot lookup tool is also a finalist for the Anthem Awards and their tool received a noteworthy promotion from Taylor Swift’s Instagram story leading up to election day.
  • Additionally, CTCL’s Executive Director, Tiana Epps-Johnson, and Vote.org’s CEO, Andrea Hailey, convened on Instagram Live leading up to election day to discuss the important work of election officials and the value of our partnership. The recording of their Instagram Live can be found here.

Leaning into our theme of “implement and iterate,” this fall marked the kickoff of expanding our data offerings so that we can connect Americans with even more salient civic information. Notably,

  • In partnership with Vote.org, we expanded our ballot data coverage to include school board candidates in New Jersey and Virginia – both states with substantial local elections this past November.
  • Being able to provide accurate information about local school board candidates in conjunction with Vote.org’s local partnerships to facilitate community outreach marks an important step toward providing digital ground truth on hyperlocal contests.

Looking ahead to 2024, we’re gearing up for a significant election year while continuing our expansion roadmap to cover more local offices and elections that are salient to voters. This will include covering local general elections outside of November for Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Alaska; adding local officeholder coverage for elected clerks in states with county-less government structures; and continuing our coverage of select school board candidates and county seats next November.
